I'm often asked why I prefer to shoot at sunset. It's a topic I've covered in my blog posts before, but it's worth re-visiting.... Let me tell you all the reasons why sunset family photography is the best (in my opinion anyway)!

The golden sunset light...

Photography is all about capturing light; without it a photographer can't make a photo. Light changes throughout the day. At noon it's high, bright and strong. It casts shadows and can be tricky to work with. It's not impossible, but it's also not ideal. In contrast, the sun early in the morning and at sunset is lower on the horizon, it's softer, more flattering and the shadows it casts are easier for a photographer to work with. It's still a challenge to make a beautiful photo, but it's easier, especially for a lifestyle photographer who is capturing the in-between moments of (often) busy families.

The style of photography...

Outdoor family lifestyle photography (phew that's a mouthful), is about capturing the moments that make your family uniquely you. A child twirling on the beach, a sweet embrace while the children are running circles or the tender look of a mother holding her baby. Of course these moments can happen at any time of day, but for my photography the sunset light becomes the anchor and perfect background to your unfolding story.

The location...

Shooting a full gallery of images during a photo session is much easier at sunset. At the beach the sun is lower, more flattering and easier to work with. It also means fewer crowds for most of the year (with the exception of warm nights in January). In parks, the light at sunset filters through the trees and you get those magical balls of twinkling light. Photographers call that bokeh, and it is perfection.

I know, what about bedtime?

I know you're thinking, ugh sunset is bedtime. And I get it, I have small children too. But if you don't trust me, look at this magical family session and then decide if a sunset family photography session is for you.

PS. the sun is setting earlier now, in winter sessions start at 4pm.... rug up and let's make memories

PPS. yes I will still shoot your session if you can't make sunset work
